IS A ROCKY RIVER RECALL COMING?

Dear Rocky River Resident,

Some say ‘elected officials’ should keep their job for their term of office.  I don’t know of anyone that has that kind of job protection.   - Neither do Rocky River elected officials!

(Rocky River, Ohio Charter) ARTICLE VIII - INITIATIVE, REFERENDUM AND RECALL - SECTION 2. RECALL.   “The electors shall have the power to remove from office by a recall election any elected officer of the City in the manner herein provided.”

Our charter allows residents to ‘recall’ or fire any elected Rocky River official – after six months into the official’s term of office.

Recall lets voters hold their elected Rocky River officials accountable for their actions – and to face the consequences from voters if need be.

If a Rocky River recall takes place-

  1. The earliest to start a recall is July 2, 2006.   That’s six (6) months into the new term of any present elected Rocky River official.

  1. Once signatures from voters for recall are acquired - the question of recalling an elected Rocky River official is sent to the Rocky River ballot.  Then voters will vote up or down on allowing that official to finish their term or to leave office immediately.

  1. If the elected Rocky River official is recalled – that person will be replaced with someone else according to Rocky River charter.

  1. ‘We the People’ will pick the time - when the question of recalling any elected Rocky River official is brought to the voters of Rocky River.

In closing – ‘recall’ reminds elected Rocky River officials to serve voter’s interests – not the official’s interests.  The residents stand supreme.

In Rocky River, power is entrusted by the people to their elected officials.  The power, the trust can be withdrawn (recalled) by the people at anytime.

It would be unfortunate if an elected Rocky River official is recalled by voters - who may have voted that person into office in the first place.

Respectfully, Fred I. Sokol – Resident – Rocky River, Ohio
