FRED SOKOL SUPPORTS -
ROCKY RIVER COMMUTER RAIL SERVICE!
To: Rocky River
City School District, Rocky River City
Government, Rocky River Business Community and
Fellow Residents,
"Cuyahoga's exodus rivals that of Katrina Counties"
"Cuyahoga County saw the sixth-largest drop in population among American counties, losing about 16,000 people between July 2005 and July 2006." ...
"Cuyahoga County has lost about 80,000 residents, or 6 per-cent of its people, 2000 Census, ..."
(Plain Dealer, Thursday March 22, 2007 "Cuyahoga's exodus rivals that of Katrina counties")
Where has Rocky River City Hall, Rocky River City Council and all You Rocky River Civic Leaders been, in trying to stop this reported 'population loss' not only in Cuyahoga County but assuredly in Rocky River?
Rocky River City Hall, Rocky River City Council and all You Rocky River Civic Leaders, who like to sit at the front table at luncheons, so you can be served first. Who like to mock fellow Rocky River residents who were just trying to do what was best for all Rocky River residents and for your own ruddy businesses? Tell us why we have lost River population under your watch.
You do not belong at City Government nor as a Civic Leader sitting, mocking and ignoring fellow residents while residents leave Rocky River for greener pastures. You hypocrites!
I thank the Plain Dealer for having the intestinal fortitude to report such an 'eye opening' story. Yet let us not stop there. I call on the other local newspapers to finally put the Rocky River elected city officials and of course Rocky River's pampered Civic Leaders' feet to the fire and have them explain why they were sleeping at the switch when residents were making a grand exit.
One Rocky River City official I understand already has moved out of Rocky River and is now living in another Suburb. So there you go. I gave the other newspapers an idea for a story. It’s a story of failure by our Elected and Civic Rocky River Leaders. That we look up to? Nope, not me.
That is my Observation. What is yours? I would like to hear from you.

"'Commuter Rail Service' with the transportation and development/ redevelopment it will bring to Rocky River and the West Shore. Will give residents and businesses a reason to come, stay and thrive here and not leave to somewhere outside of our area of Ohio. Time has come today." - Fred Sokol, Rocky River, Ohio - March 22, 2007
WHEN I'M ELECTED MAYOR OF ROCKY RIVER IN 2007, I WILL PUSH TO ESTABLISH "COMMUTER RAIL SERVICE" TO BETTER RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES OF ROCKY RIVER AND THE WEST SHORE - BETWEEN CLEVELAND AND LORAIN, OHIO.
· WHEN I'M ELECTED MAYOR OF ROCKY RIVER IN 2007, I WILL WORK WITH RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES. SO, ROCKY RIVER CAN REACH ITS FULL POTENTIAL BOTH IN A NEW MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION AND IN A NEW RE-DEVELOPMENT TOOL. THAT 'COMMUTER RAIL SERVICE' WILL BRING.
· WHY DO I FEEL 'COMMUTER RAIL SERVICE' WILL BENEFIT ROCKY RIVER AND THE WEST SHORE AREA, AND WHY IT WILL WORK? CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING.
REGIONAL COMMUNITY SUPPORT
· It appears to me there is support among the communities from Cleveland to Lorain for 'commuter rail service'. For about 6 months the regional issue of 'commuter rail service' has been discussed in communities as far east as the city of Cleveland and in Rocky River and as far west as the city of Lorain.
· Yet, Rocky River city council and city hall on Monday night March 19, 2007 ignored my request, 'to take a stand and to vote either up or down' on Rocky River resolution 10-07 "Supporting Federal Funding For a Commuter Rail Analysis". They decided (1.) to put the resolution on hold and (2.) to take no 'up or down' vote on this issue.
·
In my opinion, Rocky River City Government has its 'eyes open wide shut' on the matter of 'commuter rail service' in Rocky River and in the West Shore. Another reason why I plan to sweep out the 'visionless' Rocky River city hall once I win in 2007.
NEW TRANSPORTATION FOR COMMUTERS, TRAVELERS AND SHOPPERS IN ROCKY RIVER AND IN THE WEST SHORE AREA
· However, "Commuter Rail Service" will help solve the commuter and transportation problem for many people of the west shore and for citizens from Rocky River.
·
Yes, we have an airport, bus service and good connecting roads to downtown Cleveland and to downtown Lorain. That is why I settled here and why many others did as well. Yet railroads and commuter rail service are making a come back. Rocky River is not just a little cow town anymore with nothing more than farmland further out into the west shore.
·
People are moving further out into that west shore and still want to work in Cleveland or in Lorain and travel and shop in the west shore. Yet, gasoline is climbing back to $3.00 a gallon. Driving to work, traveling and going to stores may become less economically feasible and taking a bus may not always be available for these commuters, travelers and shoppers. "Commuter Rail Service" is the answer.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT/REDEVELOPMENT TOOL FOR ROCKY RIVER AND FOR THE WEST SHORE AREA
· For about 6 months communities from Lorain and Cuyahoga County including Rocky River have met and were made aware that 'commuter rail service' can be an 'economic development/redevelopment tool' for the West Shore.
· Rocky River's rail line can also be an engine for Rocky River economic development/redevelopment and another means of transportation for residents and businesses when 'commuter rail service' is established.
· If we want the West Shore of Ohio and Rocky River as well, to survive /develop and re-develop, people need to have another reason to live, commute to work, travel and to shop in the area. Commuter Rail Service can be that reason. How?
· Commuter Rail Service will be a 'shot in the arm' for developers as housing, businesses and schools will surely pop up along the 'commuter rail line'. It will also make residents, schools and businesses come and stay and make life better for those who already live in the 'regional corridor' between Cleveland and Lorain, Ohio. Yes, in Rocky River as well.
· Perhaps when the 'commuter rail service' is established. Rocky River may even become a 'rail station stop' along this commuter rail line and give Rocky River an economic boost?
· 'Commuter Rail Service' for Rocky River and for all the other communities between Cleveland and Lorain - will also attract and retain residents and businesses and development/redevelopment will certainly be on the upswing.
